The tent smells of old vellum and stage dust tonight. A stack of playbills lies open on the crate beside the lantern, their pages curled like dried leaves. Somewhere beyond the ridge, a generator hums — the same low, persistent note you hear backstage before curtain. This week’s trench took us deep into the strata of Gorey’s Dracula, where ink‑black crosshatching meets theatrical fog, and where relics from the 1977 Broadway production still surface like pottery shards after a sandstorm.

1. 1977 Broadway Playbill — Dracula (Langella / Gorey)
The cover alone feels like a séance: Gorey’s skeletal linework, Victorian morbidity rendered with deadpan wit.
2. Noted with Interest
- A Gorey‑signed Amphigorey.
- A Langella lobby card from the 1979 film.
- A rubber bat prop.

The Touring Company Poster — Gorey’s Dracula (circa 1985)
This tour featured Martin Landau as Dracula and co-starred at one point Dark Shadows' Own Humbert Allen Astredo as Professor Van Helsing.
This is apparently an Ad for the Kennedy Center production.
I am in ongoing search mode for a Playbill from the Production. You try to back engineer in your imagination what it must have been like seeing Astredo as Van Helsing. It is not hard to imagine him "killing it".
